Reading the Screener — /scan results
The /scan screener is OPTOMON's funnel from "the whole option-able
universe" down to "tickers worth Spawning an OOC
on today." Each row is a candidate; clicking it begins a Spawn.
Columns and what they mean
IV Rank
IV Rank measures how high today's implied volatility is relative to this same ticker's IV over the past year. The scale is 0–100:
- IV Rank 0 — IV is at its 52-week low. Premium is cheap; option buyers are paying minimum.
- IV Rank 50 — IV is at the midpoint of the year's range.
- IV Rank 100 — IV is at its 52-week high. Premium is rich; option sellers are being paid maximum.
IV Rank is not the same as IV percentile (which counts how many days the ticker spent below the current IV). Rank is the range placement; percentile is the frequency placement. The screener uses Rank.
Premium-selling strategies (CSP, Vertical Credit Put, Iron Condor) prefer IV Rank ≥ 50. Long-options strategies (Diagonal Call) prefer IV Rank ≤ 40.
Earnings within N days
This filter narrows results to tickers with an earnings event inside the chosen window — typically 7, 14, 30, or 60 days. Premium-sellers use it to find earnings premium; long-options buyers use it to avoid the post-earnings IV crush.
Caveats:
- The earnings date is the expected announce day from the calendar
vendor (
zacks, seekingalpha, or fallback). Companies move dates; the calendar lags by a day or so. - "Within N days" includes the day-of and the day-after. If a ticker announces tonight after-hours and you opened a short premium trade this morning, the trade is across the event, not before it. Treat the filter as "this ticker has earnings around now," not as a tight pre-event-only fence.
- Companies in the same week as a major Fed event or macro print can have earnings-day moves swamped by macro. The screener doesn't know this; the Wind Drift Indicator in the cockpit does.
Strategy-fit heuristic
The rightmost column suggests which strategy template fits this row, based on the IV rank, earnings proximity, and trend direction. The suggestion is a heuristic, not a recommendation — it's the system's first guess, designed to save you a click. Override freely.
Tier gating on Massive Options Basic (free)
The screener is tier-gated. On the free tier (Massive Options Basic), you can see the screener interface and read the column descriptions, but the result rows are intentionally locked — either blurred, or showing only the top 3 results with a "Upgrade to see all" call to action.
Upgrading unlocks:
- The full result set — typically 30–80 rows per scan.
- 15-minute-delayed live option chains. The free tier's chains are end-of-day-only; the upgrade tier streams a delayed (but intraday) chain so you can stage a trade against a current-ish quote.
- Saved scan presets — pin a scan configuration, run it daily.
Free tier remains useful: you can read the OOC lifecycle docs, use the Optimeter on mock positions, and run the full cockpit on positions you import manually. The screener is the upgrade-line.
